New Generation Spray Foam Insulation
Spray foam insulation is a highly effective way to insulate a home or building, reducing energy costs. It also seals spaces and prevents air leakage, a significant source of energy loss. With proper installation, homeowners and commercial customers can recoup their initial investment in lower energy bills.
Whether a customer is looking to upgrade their 90-year-old Cape Cod or build a new custom home in Climate Zone 6, Tiger Foam can help them save money and live more comfortably.
The Advantages of Spray Foam Insulation with New Generation Spray Foam
The most important components of spray polyurethane insulation are the blowing agent and the binders. The blowing agent transforms the solid polyurethane into a flexible, expandable foam and gives it its R-value. Many states and Canada have begun to ban the use of one type of blowing agent, hydrofluorocarbons, that has a high global warming potential (GWP) and contributes to climate change. Texas-based manufacturer Demilec now offers a fourth-generation, closed-cell spray foam with a blowing agent that has less than half the GWP of HFCs, called JM Corbond IV.
In addition to the binders and foam, a complete spray insulation system includes flashing at the joints between wall and roof areas, as well as the gap between foundation and basement walls. This helps prevent moisture intrusion that can damage the insulation and underlying structure, reducing the life of the home or commercial space.
While the binders and blowing agents in spray foam are nontoxic once they’re cured, the isocyanates used to create them can cause respiratory irritation for construction professionals during application. Using full face and respiratory protection is recommended to avoid contact with the materials. In addition, the chemical smell of spray foam can be unpleasant for occupants of the space until it is cured.
